Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 2026
The Daily Nines respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal data. This privacy policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard information when you visit our website.
Consent and Data Collection
The Daily Nines uses Google Consent Mode v2 to manage your privacy preferences. When you first visit our site, we present a consent banner offering two choices:
- Accept All: Enables full analytics tracking, personalized advertising, and ad-related data collection.
- Essential Only: Enables basic analytics (anonymous, cookieless) while denying all advertising cookies and personalization.
Your consent choice is stored locally in your browser and restored on subsequent visits. You can change your preference at any time by clearing your browser's cookies and local storage.
Google Consent Types
We use the following Google consent parameters:
| Parameter | Accept All | Essential Only | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| ad_storage | Granted | Denied | Cookies for advertising purposes |
| ad_user_data | Granted | Denied | Sending user data to Google for ads |
| ad_personalization | Granted | Denied | Personalized advertising |
| analytics_storage | Granted | Granted | Analytics cookies for site usage data |
Regional Defaults (GDPR / EEA)
For visitors from the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, all consent parameters default to denied until the user makes an explicit choice. This complies with GDPR requirements. For visitors outside these regions, analytics and advertising default to granted.
What Data We Collect
- localStorage data: Game progress, statistics, streaks, solve times, Mental Acuity scores, theme preference, and consent choices.
- Google Analytics: Page views, session duration, device type, geographic region (via Google Analytics 4, property G-352LMTNY5K). When analytics_storage is denied, Google uses cookieless measurement with modeled data.
- Vercel Analytics: Anonymous page view and performance metrics.
- Location: Approximate location for weather display (via browser geolocation or IP, with permission).
Third-Party Services
- Google Analytics 4 — Tracks traffic and usage patterns (subject to consent).
- Google AdSense — Serves advertisements (only when ad_storage is granted).
- Vercel Analytics — Anonymous performance monitoring.
- wttr.in — Provides weather data.
- Wikipedia API — Provides "Today in History" data and philosopher photos.
- NewsData.io / TheNewsAPI — News article sources (server-side only, no user data sent).
URL Passthrough
When ad_storage is denied, we use URL passthrough to maintain ad click measurement quality. This may append parameters (gclid, dclid, _gl) to internal links. When ad_storage is denied, ads_data_redaction is enabled to further protect your data.
Your Rights
You may access, modify, or delete all your data at any time by clearing your browser's localStorage and cookies. Under GDPR, EU/EEA users have the right to access, rectify, erase, and port their data. Under CCPA, California residents have the right to know, delete, and opt out of the sale of personal information. The Daily Nines does not sell personal information.
Data Retention
All user preference data is stored locally in your browser via localStorage and persists until you choose to clear it. Google Analytics retains aggregated data according to Google's data retention policies. No personally identifiable information is stored on our servers.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page indicates when the policy was last revised.
